EXIST Idea Incubator

This incubator program aims to support students and researchers at African universities in converting science-based start-up ideas into applications for the EXIST Business Start-up Grant in Germany.

Converting Research-Backed Ideas from Africa Into Successful Startups in Germany

The program is a German funding program that supports innovative business start-ups from universities and research institutions in their early stages.

Founders are financed for one year in order to turn their startup idea into a business plan in Germany.
The Founders must be university graduates with bachelor's, master's, or PhD degrees and research assistants (up to 5 years after graduation).
Teams of up to three persons can receive the funding for one year and must all be in Germany during that period.
The project should be a technologically innovative startup approach with good prospects for economic success.

Our Incubation Process

A streamlined process that transforms promising African ideas into competitive EXIST grant applications.

Deal Flow & Pipeline Building

We identify high-potential startup teams from across Africa through our strong network of university partners, innovation hubs, and entrepreneurship centers. In addition to scouting, we also receive direct applications—especially from highly motivated teams who submit their pitch decks to us independently.

Pitch Session

We organize the EXIST Ideathon where teams from our partner organizations pitch their ideas to our panel. For exceptional teams outside our regular pipeline, we hold online pitch and clarification meetings.
These sessions help us assess each idea’s viability and provide initial feedback on whether the concept aligns with the requirements of the EXIST Business Startup Grant.

The EXIST Incubation Phase

Teams that meet the EXIST criteria enter our incubation program. During this stage, we work closely with them to refine the idea, validate market potential, speak with domain experts, and engage potential customers in Germany.
We guide the team through the development of a strong, well-structured Idea Paper, which forms the foundation of the grant application.

Application Submission

After several weeks of intensive incubation and multiple feedback rounds, the application is finalized and submitted in its strongest form—significantly increasing the likelihood of approval.
The final funding decision is made by the jury convened by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs & Energy.
